The world moves quickly and asks us to keep up. We want to talk about the benefits of learning to be in the moment. When we engage directly with what is happening around us we ground ourselves. Being in the moment can grant you the opportunity to find joy and encounter beauty. When we notice the little things it’s easier for us to practice gratitude, patients, and respect for what’s around us.
With this being said, it’s possible to consider all the ways that being in the moment isn’t possible. Our minds are trained to keep schedules- to stay with the cultural and social passes of life. Being in the moment is recognizing where you are in the here and now. And in practice, being in the moment is engaging with your senses.
This week we challenge you to practice being in the moment. We have a couple of suggested ways to practice being in the moment that will encourage a lifetime of engaging in the moment.
To practice these skills of engagement you can set aside time in your schedule to try these few things:
- Take a walk where you set out to notice 5 things. When something catches your attention, pause and observe. Give your attention to why it caught your eye, what you think about it, how it engages you. Before you move to the next thing, take a photo of what caught your attention and you can reflect on this later. We challenge you to do this a few times over the next week and see what this does for you.
- If you have the space, take a moment to find a new part of your home that you don’t engage with as often. Take 30 minutes to go and sit in the space. Notice the way it looks around you, notice the textures, smells, sounds of this space. Let your mind focus on where you are physically. While you are doing this you can also write down the things you are noticing. Writing can be a helpful tool to keep the mind engaged with this exercise.
We hope that you take the time to marvel at what is around you.
