Learning, growing, and developing is the pulse of the Life Vitality blog that characterizes and defines our unique community. We want to encourage all of our people to find other ways to connect. Connection and community can be a great way for self development and growth. Getting involved with our community can grant us the sense of belonging. This can be a powerful tool to create a perpetual sense of support for ourselves, for others, and for our environment. September 1st:
Fashioning Aloha Exhibit
Aloha wear is more than flowers. Spanning almost 90 years, Fashioning Aloha showcases the diversity and inspiration of design motifs in aloha wear—holokū (gowns), mu‘umu‘u, holomu‘u (dresses), and aloha shirts. Starting with the birth of aloha wear in the 1930s, when printed fabric depicting Hawaiian motifs developed, and continuing to the present with contemporary brands, this exhibition explores how aloha wear and its local and global design references can signal identity, culture and connection to place. Fashioning Aloha traces the evolution of aloha wear through a stylish feast for the eyes. Garments are paired with their textile motifsʻ source materials from the museum’s collection, such as traditional Hawaiian kapa (bark cloth), Japanese kimono, a Chinese dragon robe and cheongsam, and Hawaiian quilts. Featured in the exhibition are loans along with recent acquisitions from the collection of Linda Arthur Bradley, Ph.D., former professor of apparel, merchandising, design and textiles at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and Washington State University.

Aloha Festivals
The Aloha Festivals is the largest Hawaiian cultural celebration in the US! It is a celebration of Hawaiian culture starting with the Investiture of the Royal Court on Saturday September 7, 2024, where they will don regalia worn only by Alii of the highest rank. This will be followed by the Opening Ceremony at the Royal Grove. The Waikiki Hoolaulea, Hawaii’s largest block party is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024 and the Aloha Festivals Floral Parade is on Saturday 28, 2024.
September 10th
Hanafuda Game Time
Come and play Hanafuda with your fellow community members! We have several hanafuda packs available during the program for those who wish to play, on a first come, first serve basis. Meet new friends, challenge yourself, and have fun! For those who learned how to play Hanafuda from Helen Nakano and her Sensei, now you can practice those skills in a game! This will be a self-directed play time, and no instructions will be given. Although we will have sheets of instructions for those who wish to learn more about this wonderful game. All experience levels are welcome to play! Please note that young children must be accompanied by an adult. Bishop Museum After Hours
Exclusively at September’s Museum After Hours: Experience a beautiful, moving journey through time with Tony Piedra and Mackenzie Joy’s Pau: The Last Song of the Kauaʻi ‘Ō‘ō, brought to life in our J. Out of the Darkness Walk
Volunteers Walk to Prevent Suicide Shining a Light on Suicide Prevention in Oʻahu Honolulu, Hawaii – September 14th, 2024 − The Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is excited to announce the upcoming Out of the Darkness Oʻahu Walk, a community-driven event that aims to raise awareness about suicide prevention, honor loved ones lost to suicide, and support survivors of suicide loss. This annual event will take place at 9 AM on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at the Skygate Park, Frank F. Fasi Civic Grounds, welcoming participants from all walks of life to join together and draw attention to the importance of mental health.

Hawai’i Book and Music Festival
Free weekend community festival set in the beautiful campus of the University if Hawai’i at Manoa. 150+ solo and panel events explore every aspect of Hawai’i. Celebrates Hawai’i authors and authors writing about Hawai’i. Most in-depth presentation of Hawaiian Culture for a general audience in the state. Storytelling, dance, improv and drama. Wide variety of children’s programming. Two days of hula and Hawaiian music. Publishers’ village, Booksellers, Exhibitors. Ethnic food court. Parking close by. Sept. 14 & 15, 10 a.m.-5 pm.
September 15th:
Kapulani Landgraf: Au’a Exhibition
On January 17, 2024-the anniversary of the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom-HoMA unveils Kapulani Landgraf’s powerful installation ʻAuʻa. The work was initially shown at the museum as part of the 2019 Honolulu Biennial. Featuring a new element created by the artist, this exhibition debuts the edition of ʻAuʻa that HoMA subsequently acquired for its permanent collection.

48th Annual Honolulu Intertribal Powwow
The 48th Annual Honolulu Intertribal Powwow is a two day American Indian, Alaska Native and First Nations people cultural event with traditional and contemporary dancing, drumming, singing, cultural performances and exhibitions. The powwow features Navajo frybread and tacos, along with local Hawaiian food truck vendors, shave ice treats and refreshing fruit and ice-tea beverages. The children’s activity booth offers a DIY craft project, children’s books to read and Native-inspired coloring pages to enjoy. Native American and local arts & craft vendors will also sell a variety of hand-made silver & turquoise jewelry, handbags, blankets, dreamcatchers and many other hand-crafted Native items. Educational, informational, health and other non-profit community groups will be on-hand to share relevant and current issues within the indigenous community. Attendees are encouraged to dance and participate during all the social songs to ‘feel the heartbeat of mother earth’ while listening and dancing to the beat of the drum.
